Dental Implants: Your Best Choice For Replacing Missing Teeth

A surprising number of American adults are missing one or more teeth — as many as 178 million! If you’re one of them, you’re probably thinking about your choices for replacement. Dental implants are the gold standard because they’re both attractive and functional.

At Advanced Smile DentistryDavid Basar, D.D.S. and his team want you to have a great smile, but we also want you to enjoy excellent oral health. You may not be missing a tooth (yet), but have one that is diseased or traumatized and needs to be removed. We want to get you back to chewing, talking, and smiling normally as quickly as possible. Dental implants are the answer.

Not all teeth last forever

Your teeth are amazing, and in some cases last a lifetime. However, there are many reasons they might not. Tooth decay, gum disease, and trauma all can cause tooth loss. Studies show that 15-20% of adults in the United States have some degree of gum disease, and about 30% of adults between the ages of 65-74 don’t have any natural teeth.

Missing teeth can lead to missing bone

You can probably think of several reasons it’s undesirable to be missing teeth. It can make eating more difficult, disrupt your speech patterns, and make you feel less confident. But the loss goes deeper because tooth loss can lead to bone loss. Each of your teeth has roots that attach to your jawbone and hold your teeth in place. Every time you bite down, your teeth roots stimulate your jawbone. Your bone is constantly regenerating and renewing itself in response to that stimulation.

When you lose a tooth, you lose that tooth’s roots and they stop stimulating your jawbone. As a result, you start to incur bone loss in your jaw as your body ceases to send the necessary resources for regeneration. Before long, bone loss can cause your remaining teeth to shift and move out of place, making your problem much bigger than when you first lost your tooth.

Dental implants save your bones

One of the biggest benefits of dental implants is that they mimic your teeth, right down to stimulating your jawbone. A titanium post is inserted into your jawbone, and your body’s natural healing processes fuse the post to the bone. The post is the implant and serves as a base for the crown, or visible part, of your new tooth.

Since your replacement tooth is securely anchored by your jawbone, you benefit with superior stability while also preventing bone loss.

No need to remove your new tooth

Unlike dentures, a dental implant is fused into place, so you don’t ever need to worry about taking it out. Once your implant is positioned, you treat it just like your other teeth — brushing and flossing regularly and getting biannual exams and cleanings.

There may come a time when the crown over your implant begins to wear down. If that happens, we make a new one and fit it right over your existing post.
